UK GARAGE GENRE GUIDE
2-Step Garage
The quintessential UK Garage sound featuring syncopated rhythms, shuffled beats, and soulful vocals. Characterized by its distinctive "skip" in the drum pattern, 2-step became the defining sound of the late 90s and early 2000s UK underground scene.
4x4 Garage
A more straightforward, four-to-the-floor beat structure that's perfect for peak-time dancefloor energy. 4x4 garage maintains the shuffled hi-hats and sub-bass of UKG while delivering a more driving, relentless rhythm that keeps crowds moving.
Bassline
Born in the clubs of Sheffield and Birmingham, bassline (also known as niche or 4x4 bassline) takes the 4x4 structure and adds heavy, wobbling sub-bass lines and darker, more aggressive production. It's the sound that dominated Northern UK clubs in the mid-2000s.
Grime
Evolved from UK Garage and jungle, grime strips away the soulful elements for a darker, more aggressive sound at 140 BPM. With its sparse, menacing production and MC-driven culture, grime became the voice of London's underground and launched a global movement.
